JOB TITLE: Carpenter REPORTS TO: Foreman and Superintendents Summary of position: Position performs routine physical labor; moving materials, tools, and/or equipment; cleaning equipment, vehicles, machinery, and work areas; operating various types of tools, such as, pneumatic, electric, and hand; brush roll or hand brush painting; assisting blasters by pulling hoses, mucking tanks, and removing grit. May be required to perform additional duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor for the completion of the job in a safe and timely manner. Essential Job Requirements:
Required Education: None Required Experience: Formal or informal on the job training and/or one year experience in the marine industry. Required Skills: Must be able to cooperate and work well with other employees and shipyard personnel. Must be able to take direction from supervisors or more experienced workers. Physical Requirements: Regularly required to walk; frequently required to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance, or crawl at various heights and in confined spaces; occasionally required to sit; required to reach with hands and arms, use hands to feel, grip, or handle; regularly required to safely lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; required use of vision to see up close, distance, and peripherally, as well as depth perception and ability to adjust focus in low light conditions. May be required to wear a respirator to safely perform assigned tasks. Aptitude Requirements: Must be able to carry out simple to complex instructions in a safe and efficient manner. Supervisory Responsibilities: None Equipment Used: Blast pot, hopper, forklift, dust collector, industrial vacuum units, pressure washer, air compressors, hoses, ductwork, pneumatic tools, electric tools, hand tools, vacuum bottles, compressed air, and other tools used in the maritime blasting and coating industry. Items listed are a representative sample but not an all-inclusive list. Blast equipment can be stationary, or trailer mounted. May include the operation of abrasive recycling systems. Use tape measure, jig saw, reciprocating saw, skill saw, chalk box, hand squares, and other basic hand tools for this type of work. Use plumb bob and leveling tools. Working Conditions: Repetitive, physical work. Regularly exposed to dusty conditions, extreme temperatures, high noise level, chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, ambient weather conditions, hazardous machinery, proximity to other employees. Often works on scaffolds and ladders for periods of time. To avoid injury, safety clothing required along with safety devices to protect eyes, head, or hearing is required.
