Assistant Controller

Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney is a national law firm with a proven reputation for providing progressive, industry-leading legal, business, regulatory and government relations advice to our regional, national and international clients.

We are currently seeking an experienced Assistant Controller in our Pittsburgh, PA location. This position will be responsible for preparation and review of financial statements, approval of expenditures, compliance procedures, supervise and coordinate workload of the Accounting Group and Payroll, verify, reconcile and interpret financial, payroll and statistical data and investigate trends and variances.

Our Firm is currently operating on a hybrid work schedule. Employees work from the office three days per week and two days remotely.

In this position, you will:

  • Ensure smooth operation of the daily activities within payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable and general ledger.
  • Verify, reconcile and confirm the accuracy of payroll after transmission but before pay date.
  • Ensure timely filing of all federal, state, and local payroll tax returns and deposits.
  • Prepare and ensure accuracy of monthly financial statements, supporting workpapers and related analyses.
  • Coordinate efforts between Finance and Human Resources to execute payroll changes/updates, share information, produce supporting documentation and address issues that arise throughout the process.
  • Coordinate year-end audit and annual tax information packages with external auditors.
  • Monitor cash position and debt compliance.
  • Approve check requests, expense statements and bank reconciliations.
  • Sales and Use tax compliance.
  • Maintain corporate stock records.
  • Annual budget assistance.
  • Respond to inquiries from shareholders and other Firm personnel.
  • Continuous process improvements.
  • Training and staff development.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Successful candidates will have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.
  • Six (6+) or more years of professional accounting and payroll experience -- preferably with a service firm(s).
  • Two (2+) or more years of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of financial statement and payroll tax preparation.
  • Sales and Use Tax and 1099 exposure.
  • Proficiency with computerized programs.
  • Broad understanding of GAAP, Cash Basis Accounting and accounting functional areas (accounts payable, accounts receivable and general ledgers).
  • Detailed understanding of payroll taxes, deposits and requirements.
  • Experience in service firm operations.
  • Professional oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail.
